Provence Biking
- The Classic Provencal Experience
You will find it easy to sing the
praises of Provence. Chalky limestone cliffs contrast brilliantly with azure
skies. Sun-spashed vineyards and silvery olive groves unfold across rolling
hills. Olives, tomatoes and garlic infuse the light Mediterranean cuisine.
Lively markets abound with freshly baked breads, colorful fabrics, fragrant
soaps and sun-ripened fruit. After days spent enjoying this feast of the senses,
we retire to luxurious lodgings.
Day 1 & 2
Bagnols-sur-Ceze. Meet in Avignon and shuttle to Bagnols-sur-Ceze for a picnic
lunch. Our first full day of riding follows the Ardeche River to Gorges de
l'Ardeche, a dramatic limestone gorge.
Day 3
Castillon-du-Gard. Enjoy a private tour and tasting at Cave Chateau de Montfaucon,
a family owned 11th century chateau and winery. By day's end we arrive at
the tiny hilltop village of Castillon-du-Gard.
Day 4 & 5
Les Baux-de-Provence. Traverse the Pont du Gard, a 2,000 year old aqueduct
the spans the river Gard, en route to the 11th century Abbaye St-Michel-de-Frigolet,
named for the monks who live there. The next day we ride from Les Baux, known
for its 12th century church and castle ruins, toward the limestone peaks of
the Alpilles.
Day 6 & 7
Gordes. The morning finds us is St Remy, a thriving artists' town with tree-lined
boulevards, outdoor cafes and an amazing market. We'll have a guided walking
tour through the the town that inspired Van Gogh. Continuing by bike we we
stop to explore the small mountain hamlet of Gordes, one of the lovliest villages
in Provence. Our last full day of riding loops through the plains and foothills
of the Luberon region (Peter Mayle country), and into Roussillon, known for
its incredible canyon in countless shades of ochre. After a leisurely breakfast
we shuttle to Avignon and bid au revoir.
